Immigration | Burke Releases Population Report. Now, that minister, Tony Burke, has released a report on population that is short and contains a glaring omission — meaningful discussion of immigration’s role in population growth. Based upon the immigration intake and previous projections by Treasury, Australia’s population is likely to increase to about 36 million by 2050. Yet, the report, Sustainable Australia – Sustainable Communities, makes no mention of any number.

IELTS Test Monopoly Ends. The Minister for Immigration & Citizenship, Chris Bowen, has announced 3 additional English language test options for student visa applicants. The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); the Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) &the Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) from Cambridge ESOL will be added to the existing English language tests. Property Auction results flat, no reprieve expected until Spring. While this weekend’s auction results remained largely in line with clearance rates from the past few months, the consistency of the figures leading into Winter have raised fears the property market may not recover until the Spring selling season hits in September. Such a prolonged downturn could bring down prices even further, with some experts, such as SQM Property managing director Louis Christopher, saying values will fall by at least 5% over the entire year.

Skills shortages re-emerge due to rebuilding demands and resources boom. Serious national skills shortages are re-emerging after a brief oversupply in the December quarter as Australia faces increasing demands from the rebuilding phases after natural disasters this year and the ongoing resources boom, according to the latest Clarius Skills Index. The March Index reports a net shortfall of 11,000 skilled workers across all occupation categories, predominantly in the Construction, Building and Engineering categories, across Professional, Associate Professional and Trades occupations.
